The cross is covered in bronze and one of Russian weapons in Sebastopol. It has the words "for acts of courage" on the front. On the back of the cross is the date of the act of courage, with the characters, the names engraved on the back of the bracket. On 24 May 1969 in the province of Kontum, Warrant Officer Payne was commanding the 212th Company 1st Mobile Strike Force Battalion when theBattalion was attacked by a force of North Vietnamese higher power.
The enemy isolated the two leading companies that support those Warrant Officer Payne, and with heavy mortars and rockets, attacked their position from three directions at once. After this serious attack begins to draw the native soldiers.
Be directly exposed to enemy fire, Warrant Officer Payne, through his own efforts, temporarily detained before the attacks of an alternative firehis weapon and running from one place to another collecting grenades and threw them to attack the enemy. He was wounded in hands and arms.
Despite his outstanding efforts, the native soldiers were well under high pressure of the enemy and the commander of the battalion, along with several advisers and a few soldiers, retreated. Healed the wounds and under extremely heavy enemy fire, Warrant Officer Payne covered the retreat from the newThrow grenades and fire his weapon against the enemy who tried to follow-up.
